Featured Interview - GEARS

January 13, 2016

First of all, we want to thank you for taking the time to speak with us today.

1) Tell us a little bit about the influence and purpose behind your latest song/video, "Face Down".

“Face Down is a song about how we tend to portray ourselves in a certain manner on the Social Media Stage, however under the surface, away from the computer or mobile device we may be very different.  The song is ultimately about those two worlds coming together for a minute and letting our true feelings out for everyone to see.  Often the common result is a less desirable post or rant being deleted, although it was there and we did see it.  You can’t just erase it, even after hitting the delete button.

2) You've spoken about the setbacks and journey to get to this point with the release of this EP. Tell us a little about what you went through and what kind of impact it had on the making of this music.

We’ve gone through a lot in the short time we’ve been a band.  We are completely DIY so that in itself has a certain set of challenges in an industry where many times, a band’s success can be measured almost directly by their budget and finances.  We’ve also been through losing members, letting go of members, motor vehicle accidents and some other things.  As far as how these things have affected us, we just work harder.  We’ve set out certain goals that are non-negotiable, so to speak.  We are very dedicated and determined and we just stay the course and keep working hard.  We try to put out great songs and give people an energetic and sincere stage show.  I still believe you have to have those two things to move forward in this industry,

3) What was it about "Face Down" that made you want to make it the first single off the EP?

For me, “Face Down” was the single, because it takes on something that majority of us deal with every day in Social Media.  Everyone participates in some sort of Social Media platform.  We all know people who paint a certain picture of themselves on SM and we have all witnessed their temporary “fall from grace” posts lashing out at someone or something and then, boom, deleted.  I don’t think that it’s a bad thing to let a little bit of how you really feel about a situation be expressed with a little less “political correctness.”  I think social media has ushered in a time of oversensitivity and miscommunication.

4) Now that the EP is here, what are your plans for the future? Any tour plans you can announce?

We plan on doing a few shows in February that are being worked on right now and are very close to being announced, so keep an eye on facebook.com/gearsofficial for those announcements. After that, our plans are to hit the road pretty hard in mid-May.

5) What artist or bands have had the biggest influence on your band's sound?

I think everyone in the band would cite bands like Deftones, Bowie, and Sevendust as influences.  We have written and recorded with Corey Lowery (Stereomud, Dark New Day, Eye Empire, Saint Asonia) on both records so I think you can definitely hear that influence in the music and the sound of the band.

6) If you could tour with any band, who would it be and why?

I think it would be cool to tour with a lot of bands.  It’s hard to just pick one, but Alice in Chains, Sevendust, Chevelle, any band who we could watch every night and learn from would be awesome.  Just to be around bands that have weathered the various storms that have impacted the industry over the years, yet still remain mainstays would be cool.
