BUSH Blows Audience Away in Riverside, CA
Story by Christina Avina
There have been many bands over the years who have taken a hiatus, gotten back together and then put out less than memorable new music only to fade into obscurity. When Bush reunited in 2010 and then released Sea Of Memories we knew that wasn’t going to be the case with them. The album garnered them a number one single with Sounds Of Winter, and the entire record from start to finish was well worth the long wait. Having missed seeing them live when they hit the road to support that album, there was no doubt we had to cover them when they came to town to support their latest record, Man On The Run.
Bush took over the stage at The Riverside Municipal Auditorium in Riverside, California on February 2, 2015 with fans packing the house. This venue was the perfect place to see a show, and while it afforded plenty of space to sustain a large crowd it also gave a very intimate feel and allowed fans to get up close to the stage and really take the show in. Theory Of A Deadman hit the stage prior to Bush, and they put on a solid set. There was definitely a section of the crowd who showed up to the venue strictly for Theory’s set, and if they were lucky they stayed afterwards to see Bush put on one of the best shows I’ve seen in a very long time.
When Gavin Rossdale took the stage in Riverside, anyone who had been lingering outside on the veranda of the venue had filed into make the floor space shoulder to shoulder packed, and this was a sight that clearly pleased Bush’s frontman. He gave the crowd an ear-to-ear smile before kicking of the 19-song set with Sounds Of Winter. I always love when a band starts off the show with a song that could easily wrap up the set as well. It set the tone for the energy that was about to unfold. The set was nicely balanced with both recent and classic Bush hits, including their latest single Only Way Out. The performance itself was outstanding. They have only gotten better over the years, in this reviewer’s opinion, and they will go down in my memory as a band that sounds as great live as they do in studio. The pinnacle of the evening was the four song encore, without a doubt. It began with their mega-hitMachinehead, followed by a perfect rendition of the Talking Heads classicOnce In A Lifetime, then a haunting rendition of Glycerine before bringing down the house with their closing song Come Down. It was the perfect end to a great night of music.
If Bush has not hit your city yet on this tour, be sure you get yourself out to a show. I can guarantee you won’t be disappointed. You can see the entire set list below, and enjoy a video from the show as well.
