Most, if not all, people who were alive in the 90’s know who California based Alt-Rock band Third Eye Blind is and can probably sing you every lyric to ‘Semi-Charmed Life’ on command. I am, of course, one of those people. The exciting thing for all of us who have been a fan of theirs all these years, is that Third Eye Blind is back with a new album, Dopamine, the first for them since 2009, and they did not disappoint.
For a band whose first, self-titled album was extremely successful and became a multi-platinum record, you’d think there’s no way it could possibly get better than that. But you’d be very wrong. Their new record is a perfect example of the raw honesty and pure authenticity that we have come to know and love from 3EB. The album kicks off with their lead single ‘Everything is Easy’ which is a perfect showcase for the youthful liveliness that is this record.
Third Eye Blind’s refreshing and relatable take on these new tracks is something to be admired. My personal favorite on the record is ‘Shipboard Cook’ which is a piano-driven song that is so hauntingly beautiful, I couldn’t help listening to it on repeat. Another track on the record titled ‘All The Souls’ is a much different vibe than previously heard from them, but I loved the fact that they did something that was such a contrast from what they have usually come up with. It took me by surprise and I wasn’t complaining at all.
I have always loved how poetic and unafraid frontman Stephan Jenkins is with everything he does. He is an excellent songwriter which is very evident throughout the entire album, for anyone who was unsure before. The complexity in the lyrics of every song and the beautiful musical composition shows not only is 3EB as great as we all remember them to be, but they’re even better. Dopamine is out now.
