'The Mess We Made' Serves Up A Powerful Message

Anthony Avina

Music can serve many purposes. It can be fun and entertaining. It can unlock emotions within ourselves. It can also be a vocalization for change. Tomás Doncker's This Mess We Made is all of that and more, using jazz and soulful vocals and rhythm to speak volumes about social injustice and a need for change. Tomás Doncker has quite an impressive list of achievements throughout his career. Starting out in the "No Wave" scene in New York City in the 1980's, and having toured throughout China and Japan, and having performed with artists such as Yoko Ono, jazz pianist Masabumi Kikuchi, and Bonnie Raitt, Doncker's history and talent come across beautifully in this album. His deep yet smooth vocals blend wonderfully with the mix of up-tempo beats and slowed down melodies of the music itself. Songs such as "The Revolution", "Don't Let Go" and the hit single, "Church is Burning Down" do a wonderful job of communicating the insanely important message of this album. Per his press release, Dockner states, "It all started on The day of the Charleston Massacre. Given the fact that the recent "Road to Charleston" was emotionally taxing enough for me (aka:Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, Ferguson, Eric Garner, Baltimore - not to mention some of the less publicized events around the country and the world), the heinous events which occurred on June 17, 2015 pushed me over the edge. I was overwhelmed with rage, hatred, confusion and disillusionment. I had no place to put these feelings. I had no idea how to process them. So, in a selfish attempt to maintain my own sanity I did the only thing I could do -- write about it. By Sunday, June 21, I had written 4 new songs . Within ten days I had recorded the 8 songs that would become The Mess We Made." Due to the overwhelming message of this album and the incredible talent put behind it, R&B artist and soul/blues singer Tomás Doncker is definitely worth a listen. The music is phenomenally powerful and heartfelt, and one can't help but stop and pay attention to the issues faced in this album's lyrics.
